Module 2: Discover
Before You Begin
Set aside dedicated time for this conversation after each person has completed the Learning Prototype Canvas. Creating space away from your normal agenda will help your team focus on what you need to learn rather than the tasks demanding immediate attention.
Come prepared to share the learning question you identified, the assumption you are making, and the prototype you believe could help your team learn.
Open your time together with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to give you curiosity about what you do not yet know, humility about the assumptions you carry, and wisdom as you discern what to try together.
Share What You Noticed
Go around the room and invite each person to share:
What do you believe we need to learn?
What are you currently assuming to be true?
What prototype could help us learn?
What would you pay attention to?
Allow each person to share before moving into discussion. Listen for recurring questions, shared assumptions, and places where different prototypes may be pointing toward the same opportunity to learn.
Discern Together
After everyone has shared, reflect together.
What do we most need to learn as we move toward the future we identified in Dream?
Which assumptions feel most important to test?
Which proposed prototypes could generate meaningful learning?
Are there ideas that should be combined or refined?
Would we learn more from trying one prototype together or from trying multiple prototypes?
The goal is not to choose the most impressive idea. Choose a prototype that is focused enough to try, meaningful enough to teach you something, and appropriate for your team to pursue.
Capture What Matters
Once you have decided what you want to try, capture the essentials together.
We are trying to learn...
We believe that...
We are going to try...
We will pay attention to...
We will come back together to reflect on...
If you decide to run multiple prototypes, complete these statements for each one.
Before You Finish
Clarify who will be involved and whether any additional conversations or permissions are needed before you begin.
Agree on when the prototype will start and how long you will allow it to run. Set a date to come back together so the experiment does not simply become another ongoing activity.
When you return, begin with the question at the heart of the Discover phase: What did we learn?
Pay attention to what surprised you, what confirmed your assumptions, what challenged them, and what you can see now that you could not see before. Capture the insights you want to carry forward as you continue learning your way toward the future you identified in Dream.
Close your time together in prayer, asking God to give you the courage to act, the humility to learn, and the wisdom to recognize what he may be revealing along the way.
