Complete this individually before gathering with your team.

The purpose of this exercise is to help you consider what it would take for an emerging change to move beyond the people closest to it and into the wider organization. You are not building a complete deployment strategy. You are beginning to identify what people will need in order to understand the change, participate in it, and continue learning as it takes shape.

Begin With the Change

Return to the design opportunity you identified in the previous module.

The design opportunity we are exploring is...

Now imagine this change beginning to move beyond your immediate team. Who would need to understand, participate in, or be affected by this change?

Create Clarity

Think about what people need to understand in order to participate meaningfully.

  • What must remain clear as this change moves into the wider organization?

  • What language, stories, images, or metaphors could help people understand why this matters and where you are going?

  • What ideas or principles need to remain consistent wherever this change takes shape?

Provide Support

Think about what people will need in order to move from understanding the change to actually participating in it.

  • What guidance, practices, tools, or training might help people begin?

  • What new capabilities might people need to develop?

  • Where might people need additional support as they move into unfamiliar territory?

Create Freedom

Think about where people need room to adapt the design to their particular context.

  • What should remain consistent across the organization?

  • Where could the expression look different depending on the people, place, or context?

  • What decisions should people be trusted to make for themselves?

Keep Learning

Deployment will reveal things you cannot fully anticipate in advance.

  • What will you need to pay attention to once this change begins moving?

  • How will you hear from the people who are actually living with the change?

  • What signs of fruit, friction, confusion, or unexpected possibility would help you understand what you are learning?

Name the Deployment Priority

Looking across what you have identified, what feels most important to get right as this change begins moving beyond your immediate team? Complete the sentence:

For others to begin inhabiting this change, we need to...

Bring your completed Deployment Canvas to your team conversation. You’ll compare what you noticed and begin discerning how to release change with enough clarity and support for others to participate, enough freedom for contextual expression, and a commitment to keep learning along the way.
